DANINHA / MALEZA / WILDFLOWER
A feeling of emptiness, a restless mind and two pieces of land. What is born from the void that unites them? "WILDFLOWER" is a poetic essay about the undesirable, the lack of control and duality. "How to deal with the unexpected lives that appear on the ground?" is the starting point to this question-mark-shaped short film, that seeks to explore the different possibilities of interaction between human beings and the uncontrollable side of nature.
The Film
After watching her student film, we invited Carina Pierro Corso to do a five month residency at Studio Kimchi in Barcelona, the catch was that she would need to complete a full short film during that time. Carina took a couple weeks to think about it and then pitched us WILDFLOWER. We loved it, so shortly after she moved to Barcelona to begin her residency, where she would find the space to do her magic. To tell her story she used lots of different analog animation techniques, from traditional 2D animation to sand animation, watercolour painting, pixilation, stop motion or even a Polaroid time lapse. In the end she created this experimental animated documentary that gives us a wonderful peak into her beautiful mind
The Book
After finishing the film, Carina wanted to share her creative process with the world, so she started working on a companion book to go with the film. The book features pieces of her diaries, research photos, sketches, scripts and final images from the film. She designed the entire book herself and we had it printed in a beautiful hard cover edition, limited to 500 copies
The behind the scenes documentary
Throughout the making of the film we shot behind the scenes footage almost every day. Later we interviewed Carina and edited all together into this making of documentary that allows you to take a look at the process, and allows us to go back in time and revisit those weeks when we were creating this film. Terrarium of Weeds: The Creative Process behind Wildflower, the exhibition
Once the film started its festival circuit, we now had a film, a book, a making of documentary and a bunch of physical materials used to make the film, so we decided to put everything together in an exhibition that showcased the artistic process of creating this short film. It opened in Barcelona on September 2024 at the Centre Civic Fort Pienc, with a talk between Carina and Carolina Lopez.
